BACKGROUND
The challenge of bringing a local spa online
In 2022, New Look Spa faced the challenge of expanding their customer base and improving service booking. Located in a busy area in Los Angeles, they offered massages, nail care, and facials, along with unique party packages that allowed customers to group services and even create custom packages for friends. However, without an online presence, they were missing out on a large portion of potential customers who preferred the convenience of browsing services and booking online. After speaking with the spa owner, I explored how design could help solve this problem and bring their business to a wider audience.
Research
Talking with spa clients
To kick off the project, I spent time talking to both the spa’s staff and regular customers to understand their needs and frustrations. I visited New Look Spa to observe how bookings were handled and what kinds of questions people had when choosing services. This gave me valuable insights into what clients cared about—such as the ease of creating custom packages and the need for clear information about the spa’s party packages. I also learned that many clients wanted to book treatments with friends but found it difficult to arrange without a system in place.
The Big Idea
It became clear early on that the website needed to make the booking process as effortless as possible. To achieve this, I focused on three key areas: simplicity, user-friendliness, and speed.
Okay, How do We Get There?
I drilled into each attribute to explore how it would manifest in the product experience. This approach really clicked with the team and helped everyone understand the strategy and next steps.
UX RESEARCH
Mapping out the user experience
After refining my big idea, I began mapping out the user flows and sitemap for New Look Spa's website. I mapped out the main interactions based on different user needs:
1. Emma is looking to book a relaxing massage after hearing good things about New Look Spa. She visits the website to browse the services and wants to book an appointment without calling.
2. Sarah is planning a spa day with her friends. She wants to explore party packages on the site and build a custom package where she can choose different services.
3. Mark is a first-time visitor who just moved to the area. He’s interested in checking out the spa and learning about all the available treatments, but also wants to know if he can book a treatment online.
With these users in mind, I started designing the experience. I first created sitemap, then it was time for rough wireframes and then began working on the layout, ensuring each flow was easy to follow and catered to the specific needs of the users.

Designing the real deal
After refining the wireframes, I moved on to designing the high-fidelity screens. The design emphasized a clean, calming aesthetic that reflected the spa’s relaxing atmosphere. I used soft, neutral colors like Light Grayish Olive and Almond to create a soothing online experience. Each service was clearly listed with descriptions, making it easy for users to learn about the massages, facials, and nail care treatments offered.
One of the key features was the “Create Your Own Package” tool. This allowed users to pick services, book a session with friends, and see pricing updates in real-time. Additionally, the Party Packages section provided clear details about what was included in each package, which was important since customers often called for clarification.
STORYTELLING
Built To Be Responsive
I knew that many potential customers would visit the site from their mobile devices, so I ensured the design was fully responsive. The site worked seamlessly on phones and tablets, allowing users to browse services and book appointments easily, no matter the device. This was crucial for busy customers who wanted to quickly check availability and make a booking on the go.
Emphasizing the spa experience
Since New Look Spa prides itself on creating a relaxing, personalized experience, I made sure the website reflected that. I used high-quality images of the spa’s facilities, creating a virtual experience that mimicked the welcoming environment of the spa. Testimonials from regular clients were prominently featured, helping to build trust with new customers.
I also focused on making the Create Your Own Package and Party Package features highly visible, as these were key selling points for the spa. It was important that customers could quickly understand and navigate these unique offerings.

Clarifying the booking process
One major pain point for spa clients was the complexity of booking services, especially when arranging group visits. I simplified this by designing a booking system that allowed users to view available times, select their services, and confirm their appointments in just a few clicks. The Create Your Own Package tool made it easy to book group treatments, and users could choose services for themselves and their friends in one seamless flow.
Conclusion
Wrapping Up the Big Idea
Designing the website for New Look Spa helped them transform their customer experience. By offering an easy-to-use booking system and highlighting their unique services like party packages and custom group bookings, the spa was able to attract more customers and streamline their operations. The site gave New Look Spa the professional online presence they needed to reach new clients and make booking spa treatments simpler than ever.
