AI-Powered Interior Design Mobile App

Summary

I conducted a solo, 5-day design sprint to create this app. I focused on providing design ideas and, more importantly, showing where to buy the furniture used in the designs

EXPANDING FROM Design Inspiration to Direct Buying

I designed Decor AI app to make designing spaces easier and fun. It gives users lots of design ideas based on their favorite colors themes and design styles. Users can look at each design and find out about the furniture, like its name, price, and where to buy it, all in one place.

BEFORE WE BEGIN

Defining the Scope

An important skill for any product designer is knowing how to set the scope of a project and then stick to it. I began this project by figuring out what users needed and estimating how long it would take to find a solution. I gave myself overall one week for this, and once everything was set, I began the fun part: design exploration.

Day 1

Find the problem, explore solutions

In my personal experience, decorating my new home came with challenges, like not having enough time to visit all the popular furniture stores and not knowing what or where to buy furniture. After talking to my friends about my frustration, I realized they all faced the same issue: constantly switching between different websites or apps like Pinterest and TikTok for inspiration, using Google Lens to find the exact furniture, and then trying to figure out where to buy it. I put some thought into what design could do to help with this problem.

To solve this problem, I aimed to simplify the home design process and make it less stressful and more enjoyable. I decided to create an all-in-one app that provides everything my friends and I need, including decor inspiration photos and direct links to purchase the items.

Research

talking to real people

I wanted to see if other people have my problem as well. Insights from friends and family were easy to gather. After talking with 5 of them, here are some of their main pain points:

  • They want to know which furniture fits their home style exactly to avoid returns or exchanges.
  • They have difficulty with measuring their spaces.
  • They are too busy or prefer not to visit stores in person.
  • They don’t know how their space look like with different designs.

Day 2 & 3

Map out the app

Great! One of the most enjoyable parts of my project was bringing everything together to create a sitemap that outlines the app's structure. I made sure to include all the important information and must-have features based on what I heard from talking to people. These features include the ability to scan living spaces, add filters like colors and design styles, and access website links to find where to buy the furniture.

SKETCHING AND EXPLORING

After knowing what features are priorities for this app, I got to work drawing and exploring ideas. I spent some time to see how I can implement all these features in one app. This step helped me  play out how my solution would work in real life. Seeing how users would interact with the interface ignited the upcoming decision process.

Day 4 & 5

Designing the Real Deal

After wireframes and grey-boxing, the next step was to begin bringing this thing to life. My goal when designing these Hi-Fi screens was to make sure everything looked good, worked well, and was easy to use. I focused on all the little details, like colors, fonts, spacing, and keeping things consistent.
